Badr bloc urges Coordination Framework to name PM within 15-day deadline

BAGHDAD — The Badr parliamentary bloc called Sunday on the Coordination Framework to submit its prime ministerial nominee to President Nizar Amedi within the constitutional 15-day window, as government formation talks intensify following Saturday’s presidential election.

Bloc head Humam al-Tamimi said at a press conference that “until this moment, the Coordination Framework has not officially submitted a name to the president of the republic,” and urged the alliance to present its candidate promptly. He said “there are several names proposed within the Coordination Framework,” but that the decision rests with the alliance.

Al-Tamimi warned that the next government faces significant challenges. “There are major economic problems, and therefore the next government requires a high level of responsibility to face these challenges,” he said.

The prime ministerial question remains deeply contested. The Coordination Framework nominated former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki in January, drawing direct U.S. opposition — President Trump warned Washington could halt support for Iraq if Maliki returned to power. A State of Law Coalition official claimed last week that the U.S. chargé d’affaires also conveyed opposition to renewing Sudani’s term, leaving the dominant Shiite alliance without a clear American-approved candidate. Under the constitution, the prime minister-designate has 30 days to form a government once tasked by the president.
