Nechirvan Barzani, Syrian president discuss regional tensions by phone

ERBIL — Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani received a phone call Monday evening from Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, where the two leaders discussed regional developments and ongoing conflict, according to a statement from the Kurdistan Region Presidency.

During the call, both sides exchanged views on “the regional situation and the recent developments regarding the war and its repercussions,” and “emphasized the necessity of enhancing diplomatic initiatives to halt the conflict and achieve a peaceful resolution.”

The statement said the leaders also stressed “the significance of upholding peace and stability within the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” noting that President al-Sharaa “denounced the assaults on the Kurdistan Region.”

The conversation further addressed “the circumstances of the Kurds and other communities in Syria,” as well as “Syria’s relations with Iraq and various other matters of mutual concern.”

The call comes as the Kurdistan Region has faced a series of drone and missile attacks in recent weeks targeting both civilian areas and security sites. Local authorities have reported repeated strikes across Erbil and other areas, with some incidents causing casualties and damage to homes and infrastructure.

Kurdistan Region officials have called for stronger measures to prevent such attacks, while regional leaders continue to engage in diplomatic contacts to address escalating tensions and security concerns.
