Worker killed, another injured in Kirkuk construction fall

KIRKUK — One construction worker died and another was seriously injured Saturday after falling from scaffolding at a work site in Kirkuk’s Derwaza neighborhood, according to medical officials at Azadi Hospital.

“A short time ago, the body of a worker named Azhar Karam, 35 years old, was brought to the forensic doctor, and another worker named Eyad Yousif, 20 years old, who was seriously injured, was brought to our hospital,” a source at the hospital told 964media.

The two men reportedly fell while working on a scaffold. Karam died at the scene, while Yousif remains under close medical supervision.

The incident is the latest in a series of workplace fatalities in Kirkuk. On Sept. 6, two other workers died in separate accidents: one, a 36-year-old painter, was electrocuted while working on Doctors Street; the other, a 45-year-old electrician, fell from a utility pole near Shoraw neighborhood. Both men were married and fathers.

The string of incidents brings the total to four workplace deaths and one serious injury in Kirkuk over the past week.
