Four arrested in Baghdad International Airport gold smuggling case

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Integrity Commission has announced the arrest of four individuals linked to a gold smuggling attempt at Baghdad International Airport involving an Iraqi Airways flight, according to a statement released Tuesday.

The commission stated that its investigation team executed arrest warrants issued by the Central Anti-Corruption Criminal Court. The operation followed extensive investigations and surveillance carried out by the commission’s Baghdad Directorate under the supervision of a specialized investigative judge.

The arrests are part of an ongoing investigation into an attempt to smuggle 13.7 kilograms of gold bars through the airport. Earlier reports revealed that Iraqi Border Forces, in coordination with Customs Police, thwarted the operation. Advanced screening equipment at the airport detected the gold bars, leading to the initial detention and confiscation of the contraband.

Dr. Mohammed Ali Al-Lami, Chairman of the Integrity Commission, had previously directed the commission’s legal department to ensure a comprehensive investigation. “This investigation underscores our commitment to combating corruption and safeguarding Iraq’s borders from illicit activities,” Al-Lami said. He emphasized the importance of adhering to the Integrity and Illicit Gains Law No. 30 of 2011, which requires investigative judges to inform the commission of corruption cases and provide progress updates.

Tuesday’s arrests represent a significant step in the case. “The commission remains vigilant in ensuring that those responsible for corruption and smuggling are held accountable,” the statement noted.
