Fish prices spike in Duhok following closure of fish ponds

DUHOK, Jan. 23 – The dismantling of fish ponds in Daquq and Kirkuk has triggered a surge in fish prices in Duhok, especially for carp, a favorite in the city.

Safin Sadiq, owner of a Duhok fish restaurant, told 964media that a month ago, fish cost 6,000 dinars ($4) per kilogram. Now, prices have jumped by 2,000 to 3,000 dinars per kilogram, and may rise further, Siddiq said.

Redir Sadiq, head of the Duhok Animal Resources Directorate, said the Iraqi government decided months ago to remove many ponds, mostly in Kirkuk and Daquq, leading to a major drop in numbers, driving up prices.

Currently, a kilogram of grilled fish in Duhok costs around 9,000 ($6) dinars, and live fish costs between 8,000 and 8,500 dinars per kilogram.
