Dozens of trees reportedly destroyed

Fallen power lines set fire to date palm orchard in Basra

BASRA, August 3 – Several fallen power cables set fire to an orchard in Basra’s Al-Hawir district on Wednesday, destroying dozens of date palm trees.

A security source told 964: “The fire broke out in a date palm orchard in the Surah area, belonging to Al-Hawir district in the northern part of Basra governorate.”

“The power cables fell on the date palm trees, causing the fire, and resulted in the outbreak of a blaze in the orchard.”

“The reason the power cables fell was attributed to high temperatures and the excessive load on them.”

Local civil defense teams managed to extinguish the fire, which burned around 50 date palm trees.
