Writers union announces inaugural Iraqi Literary Week in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, November 29 — The General Union of Writers and Authors in Iraq is gearing up for its first literary week from December 2-8, titled “Between the Banks of the Book.” The event will feature a book fair and various cultural and literary activities.

Omar Al-Sarai, General Secretary of the Union, stated:

The Union of Writers decided to organize a new activity to add to its series of events, namely Iraqi Literary Week, to provide a distinct and intensive activity dedicated to literary events. It also offers a good opportunity for publishing houses that represent cultural institutions aiming to disseminate culture, literature, arts, and books in general.

This marks the first such week organized by the Union, to be repeated annually with the development of this idea. The week, scheduled from December 2 to 8, will include cultural and artistic events, book signings by various poets and authors, poetry evenings, and literary and critical sessions. Approximately 15 publishing houses and cultural institutions will participate in the week.

All these activities will take place at the Union’s headquarters and its courtyard, where the Union will provide presentation spaces and necessary equipment, as well as areas for publishing houses.

The idea has generated enthusiasm among well-known publishing houses and intellectuals, especially as the Union has extended invitations to universities and colleges to encourage university students’ participation. The Union’s doors will also be open to educational and cultural trips.
