Shopping festival draws Eid crowds to Tikrit with goods from Cairo to Karachi
SALAH AL-DIN — An international shopping festival coinciding with Eid al-Adha has brought vendors from seven countries to Tikrit, offering goods from Egyptian cotton clothing and Aleppo soap to Indian jewelry and Emirati perfumes at promotional prices.
The festival, running through May 30, includes pavilions for companies from Egypt, Jordan, the UAE, India, Syria, Pakistan and Yemen alongside Iraqi participants, with Egyptian exhibitors occupying half the space. Goods on display include women’s clothing including the Kerdasa abaya from Egypt’s Giza Governorate, cotton furnishings, aluminum goods, cosmetics, silver items, honey, natural leather bags, mother-of-pearl pieces and traditional arabesque furniture from Khan el-Khalili market.
Abdul Jawad Mahoul from the Indian pavilion told 964media the display includes accessories, jewelry, local slippers and “the famous Indian kohl and many other goods, all at suitable prices.” Tamim Mohammed at the Emirati pavilion said it carries oud and European perfumes with an Eid offer of a free second bottle with every purchase.
Syrian sales manager Mohammed al-Halabi promoted Aleppo’s natural laurel soap and olive oil products, saying “this soap treats dandruff, itching and hair wrinkles.” Egyptian vendor Yasser Mohammed, who has been participating in Iraqi shopping festivals since 2014, said individual clothing pieces and Pharaonic souvenirs sell for 15,000 dinars, with two pieces for 25,000.
