Baghdad court sentences man to four years for impersonating a judge

BAGHDAD — The Karkh Criminal Court sentenced a man to four years in prison on Sunday for impersonating a judge and an employee of the Federal Commission of Integrity with the intent of obtaining financial benefit, according to Iraq’s Supreme Judicial Council.

The case adds to a pattern of impersonation incidents across Iraq. In late March, Basra health authorities arrested a man accused of posing as a dentist and operating an illegal clinic in his home. In early February, security forces arrested a man posing as a doctor and running an illegal clinic in Baghdad, while police separately arrested a Syrian national for impersonating a dentist and operating an unlicensed dental clinic. The Central Criminal Court issued two 10-year sentences against a man for impersonating Counter Terrorism Service officers at the ranks of major and captain. In June 2025, an inmate was found to be posing as an airport officer and running an extortion scheme from inside prison, while the National Security Service arrested three people in Diwaniyah and Diyala for posing as officers and selling fake job appointments.
