Basra Gas Company completes pipeline link to boost LPG output

BASRA — Basra Gas Company has completed a pipeline connection project designed to increase liquefied petroleum gas production by 500 to 600 tons per day, the company announced Wednesday, as Iraq seeks to address recurring cooking gas shortages.

The project links a flexible pipeline to a main transmission line, enabling the investment of 70 to 80 million cubic feet per day of additional gas from the Bin Omar field, processed at the North Rumaila gas liquefaction plant via the Majnoon gas pipeline. Work began April 15 and was completed April 26 — 11 days later — through coordination between company teams and a supporting contractor. Basra Gas Company also supplied the full 5-kilometer, 20-inch diameter pipeline used in the project.

The company said the work was carried out “in light of the country’s urgent need to maximize LPG production,” following directives from the Oil Ministry and the deputy oil minister for gas affairs.

Iraq has experienced recurring cooking gas shortages over the past two months, driven by reduced domestic supply, fluctuations in associated gas production and maintenance constraints at processing facilities. Supply gaps have been reported across several areas, with rising demand adding further pressure on available quantities.
