Education Ministry suspends school nationwide due to weather

BAGHDAD — The Education Ministry announced the suspension of official school attendance in all schools across Iraq on Wednesday and Thursday due to weather conditions.

In a statement, ministry spokesman Karim al-Sayyid said, “For the safety of our dear students, Acting Minister of Education Ahmed al-Asadi has directed the general directorates of education in all governorates to suspend official attendance for Wednesday and Thursday due to the weather conditions.”

He added that missed lessons will be compensated.

“The missed days and the remaining curriculum will be made up during the following Saturdays,” he said.

Iraq’s Interior Ministry warned residents in five governorates Tuesday to take precautions amid forecasts of heavy rainfall that could trigger flash flooding.

The ministry called on residents in Wasit, Diyala, Anbar, Kirkuk and Salah Al-Din to stay away from riverbeds, valleys and low-lying areas, saying civil defense units and security formations are “fully prepared to respond to any emergency.
