Iraqi forces shoot down four drones near Baghdad airport

BAGHDAD — Iraqi security forces shot down four drones near Baghdad International Airport on Wednesday, the head of the Security Media Cell said, with no casualties or damage reported.

Lt. Gen. Saad Maan said security forces “dealt with the drones as soon as they were detected and were able to successfully shoot them down,” adding that “the necessary measures were taken to ensure the safety of the airport’s surroundings.”

The incident is the latest in a series of drone and missile incidents across Iraq and the Kurdistan Region since the regional war began Feb. 28. Earlier this week, coalition forces intercepted three explosive-laden drones over Erbil, with debris from one falling near the UAE Consulate. Rockets have also targeted the U.S. Embassy compound in Baghdad’s Green Zone on multiple occasions since the war began.
