Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah governorate, a key source of fuel for power plants across the Kurdistan Region
Dana Gas says Khor Mor field ready to resume production once safe
ERBIL — Dana Gas said Thursday that the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniyah governorate is prepared to resume production as soon as conditions are deemed safe, following a suspension linked to the regional security situation.
“Gas production at the Khor Mor field has been temporarily halted since Feb. 28, 2026,” the company said, adding that the pause was implemented in coordination with the KRG’s ministries of Natural Resources and Electricity as a precautionary measure. The field “has been prepared and is in a position to resume production rapidly whenever deemed suitable,” Dana Gas said.
Khor Mor is the main fuel source for power plants across the Kurdistan Region. The suspension reduced electricity generation capacity by between 2,500 and 3,000 megawatts, triggering widespread outages in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah and surrounding areas. At the time, the KRG ministries said the halt was ordered “to protect the lives of employees” because of “the abnormal situation and the war in the region.”
The field has faced repeated attacks in recent years. In November 2025, a drone strike on the Emirati-operated complex ignited a major storage tank, cutting gas supplies to power plants and causing the loss of roughly 2,600 megawatts — disrupting about 80 percent of the Kurdistan Region’s power grid and triggering prolonged blackouts across the Kurdistan Region.
