Kurdistan Region PM inaugurates Erbil–Gomaspan dual carriageway
ERBIL — Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Tuesday officially opened the Erbil–Gomaspan dual carriageway, a 16-kilometer project completed ahead of its original deadline.
Speaking at the ceremony, Barzani thanked the executing company, Hemn Group, saying it had delivered the project “within a measured timeframe, in a very good manner and according to international standards” and placed it “at the service of the people of Kurdistan.” He also expressed appreciation to engineers, workers and relevant officials involved in the project’s implementation.
The road, which connects Erbil to several other areas of the Kurdistan Region, includes 16 kilometers of main roadway and 8 kilometers of service roads. Each direction is 11 meters wide and consists of three lanes, including a designated emergency lane. The project began on March 14, 2024, and was initially scheduled for completion at the end of 2026, but was finalized in 11 months with the involvement of 2,000 workers and 600 machines.
Barzani said the road would improve traffic flow and safety, noting that prior to its reconstruction the route had been dangerous for commuters. “This is a major project that can serve citizens’ transportation needs, and at the same time citizens’ safety has been taken into consideration,” he said. “We have all traveled on this road. I remember many times visiting Erbil or returning by this route — it was truly a dangerous place.”
The Erbil–Gomaspan road forms part of the broader route linking Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. Beyond Gomaspan, however, the road continues as a single carriageway toward Dukan district in Sulaymaniyah governorate, a stretch long criticized by drivers for its condition and safety risks.
Barzani said the new dual carriageway would allow residents to reach their destinations in less time and facilitate access to Erbil for surrounding communities, helping connect cities and towns across the region. Referring to the Gomaspan Dam and nearby tourist areas, he said the project would make it easier for residents to visit natural sites, especially with the approach of spring.
“I ask citizens to observe traffic instructions and, to protect their lives and the lives of others, not to drive at high speed,” Barzani said, adding, “Once again, congratulations to you all, and thank you very much.”
