Sudani’s bloc to review support for Maliki as opposition mounts
BAGHDAD — The Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, has decided to review its support for the premiership nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, amid mounting political opposition.
In a statement, the head of Sudani’s parliamentary bloc, Baha al-Araji, said the initial support for Maliki was aimed at breaking the political deadlock and accelerating government formation following the 2025 elections.
“The aim of Mr. Sudani in supporting the nomination of Mr. Maliki was to push toward ending the political stalemate and to move toward resolving constitutional entitlements, in fulfillment of his commitment to his supporters,” Araji said. “He acted as part of the solution, not as a party to the crisis.”
However, Araji acknowledged that the path forward has become increasingly complicated.
“This course is now facing rejection from key parties within the Coordination Framework, political forces within the national arena, as well as regional and international objections,” he said. “This necessitates a reassessment of the tools and mechanisms needed to achieve the desired goal, away from bias and personal interests.”
Maliki was nominated by the Coordination Framework following the elections. His candidacy has exposed divisions within the alliance and drawn opposition from Sunni political forces, as well as public criticism from the United States.
