Qatar’s emir hosts leaders of two major Iraqi Sunni blocs
NEWSROOM — Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani met with Mohammed al-Halbousi, president of the Taqaddum Party, and Khamis al-Khanjar, head of the Sovereignty Alliance, in Doha to discuss Iraq’s political path and the formation of its next government.
According to a statement from the Al-Siyada Alliance, the meeting addressed shared issues between the two countries and the region. The parties stressed that the next Iraqi government must ensure “genuine representation for all segments of the Iraqi people” and help strengthen national unity. The Emir affirmed Doha’s support for efforts “that contribute to achieving stability in Iraq” and enable the country to play its historic role during ongoing regional developments.
In a separate statement, the Taqaddum Party said al-Halbousi and al-Khanjar also held two meetings on Tuesday in Doha with the Emir and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani. At the start of the meeting, the Emir offered “congratulations on the successful parliamentary elections in Iraq,” stressing the importance of cooperation among Iraq’s national forces to complete constitutional requirements and reiterating Qatar’s support for Iraq’s stability and prosperity.
In November, Iraq’s major Sunni parties announced they had formed a unified Sunni coalition called the National Political Council, bringing together Taqaddum, Azm, the Sovereignty Alliance, the National Hasm Alliance and Jamaheer. Meeting at the Baghdad home of Khamis al-Khanjar, the groups said the council will coordinate positions throughout the sixth parliamentary cycle as a counterpart to the Shia Coordination Framework. In their statement, they said the step was taken “out of national responsibility,” while al-Khanjar noted that “the winning Sunni blocs met today” to set a roadmap for the next stage and continue coordination “with all parties, including the Kurdistan Region.”
