Storm system brings rain, cooler temperatures across Iraq
BAGHDAD – Iraq is experiencing widespread unstable weather on Monday, with cloud cover and repeated rounds of rain stretching from the north to the far south, the General Meteorological Authority said.
The authority’s forecast department reported ongoing rain activity accompanied by thunder and lightning in several regions, with active southeasterly winds and significantly lower temperatures reducing horizontal visibility, particularly in areas affected by dust and heavy rainfall. Cooler conditions prevail in the morning and at night, especially in mountainous areas.
Skies are expected to be mostly cloudy, turning partly cloudy at times, with chances of light to moderate showers that may be accompanied by thunder and lightning. Periods of heavy rain are likely in many northern areas and at scattered locations in the central region, while some areas, particularly in the far northeast, may see hail and downdraft winds.
Temperatures are several degrees lower than the previous day in central and northern regions and slightly lower in the south. The authority said conditions will be cool during morning and nighttime hours, with relatively mild daytime temperatures and severe cold in mountain areas.
Winds are forecast to be moderate and southeasterly, ranging from 20 to 30 kph, increasing at times during the day in much of the central region and parts of the north, where gusts may reach 50 kph and raise local dust. Periods of calm are expected in western parts of the central region.
Visibility is expected to range between 6 and 8 kilometers in hazy conditions, dropping to 4 to 6 kilometers in dusty areas, and falling further to between 2 and 4 kilometers in regions experiencing heavy rainfall.
