'Terrorist attack'

KDP leader Masoud Barzani calls for action after Khor Mor strike

ERBIL — Masoud Barzani, head of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, condemned the drone strike on the Khor Mor gas field, describing it as a terrorist act targeting the economic infrastructure and public interests of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

“We strongly condemn the terrorist attack on the Khor Mor field last night, which targets the economic infrastructure and the interests of the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and all its citizens,” the Barzani Headquarters said in a statement released Thursday.

The statement noted that such attacks have been repeatedly condemned in the past, but without tangible consequences. “Although these unlawful assaults on the Region have been denounced multiple times, responses have been limited to condemnation alone, without any deterrent action against the perpetrators,” it said.

The headquarters called for immediate and concrete measures to prevent future strikes. “It is time to take serious and practical steps regarding these violations and unjust attacks, to put an end to them and hold those responsible accountable,” the statement concluded.

The Khor Mor facility, located in Sulaymaniyah, was hit by a drone late Wednesday, causing a shutdown in operations and widespread power outages across the Kurdistan Region.

Khor Mor has come under repeated rocket and drone fire in recent years, with no group claiming responsibility. In April 2024, a drone strike on the facility killed four Yemeni workers and temporarily cut gas supplies, triggering widespread blackouts.

U.S. Special Envoy to Iraq Mark Savaya also condemned the drone strike, accusing illegal armed groups “driven by hostile foreign agendas” of carrying out the attack and urging Iraqi authorities to respond decisively.
