Agrees joint probe with KRG
PM Sudani calls Khor Mor strike ‘an attack on all of Iraq’
ERBIL – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani “strongly condemned” the Wednesday attack on the Khor Mor gas complex during a phone call with Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani on Thursday, describing the strike as “an attack on all of Iraq,” according to a KRG statement.
The statement said Barzani received a call from al-Sudani, who “condemned and denounced in the strongest terms the attack that targeted the Khor Mor gas field.” The two leaders agreed to form a joint investigation committee that will begin work immediately to identify those responsible, arrest them and bring them to justice.
The Khor Mor field, located in Chamchamal in Sulaymaniyah governorate, is one of the Kurdistan Region’s most important energy assets. Operated by Emirati company Dana Gas, it produces a substantial share of the region’s natural gas, which fuels many of its power plants.
Officials said the drone strike ignited a major storage tank and cut gas supplies to power plants, triggering widespread blackouts across Erbil and Sulaymaniyah. The shutdown caused the loss of 2,600 megawatts of electricity, disrupting about 80 percent of the regional grid and leaving large parts of the Kurdistan Region without power.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Khor Mor has come under repeated rocket and drone fire in recent years. A drone strike in April last year killed four Yemeni workers, caused major damage and disrupted gas supply, leading to extensive power outages.
Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani also condemned the latest strike, saying the federal government is responsible for preventing repeat attacks and bringing the perpetrators to justice.
