Basra suspends public sector work to support Iraq in World Cup playoff
BAGHDAD — Basra Gov. Asaad al-Eidani announced Monday that official working hours will be suspended across the governorate on Tuesday as Iraq faces a decisive World Cup playoff second leg against the United Arab Emirates.
The decision, shared in a statement, was made to align with “the large public momentum” and reflects the local government’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for the team.
The second leg, scheduled for Nov. 18 at Basra International Stadium, follows a 1-1 first leg draw in Abu Dhabi. The venue holds more than 65,000 spectators, and local officials expect a near-capacity crowd.
Iraq reached the playoff round after a goalless draw against Saudi Arabia on Oct. 14 in Jeddah, a result that ended its hopes of direct qualification. The winner in Basra will advance to an inter-confederation playoff in March 2026 for a final World Cup berth.
Vendors at Basra Sports City said Sunday that VIP tickets, priced at 50,000 dinars ($35), sold out early as thousands of fans lined up outside the stadium complex.
