Coordination Framework calls for swift efforts to form new government

BAGHDAD — The Coordination Framework, a coalition of Shia parties that leads Iraq’s current government, on Tuesday expressed gratitude to citizens who took part in the parliamentary elections and called for serious efforts to form a government that reflects “the will of the people”.

In a statement, the bloc reaffirmed its “full commitment to respecting constitutional deadlines and upcoming entitlements, and to working seriously toward forming a government that expresses the will of the people and meets their aspirations for reform, service, and stability — in a way that enhances citizens’ trust in state institutions and safeguards the democratic experience in Iraq.”

Polling stations across Iraq closed automatically at 6 p.m. on Tuesday as voting machines shut down nationwide, ending the general ballot for the 2025 parliamentary elections. Election staff immediately began manual and electronic counting to verify results before transmitting them to the Independent High Electoral Commission’s central servers. The commission said more than 20 million voters were eligible to cast ballots, with preliminary results expected tomorrow.
