SALAH AL-DIN — Three people were killed and five others injured Wednesday evening in a traffic accident on the Kirkuk–Baghdad highway near the Suleiman Beg subdistrict of Tuz Khurmatu, medical sources told 964media.
The collision, which occurred around 5:30 p.m., involved a Hyundai Sonata and a Dodge vehicle. Ibrahim Khalid, a paramedic at Tuz Khurmatu General Hospital, told 964media, “Two Iraqi soldiers were killed in the Sonata, while a civilian in the Dodge also lost his life, and five others from both vehicles were injured.”
Khalid said two of the injured were in critical condition and were transferred to Kirkuk’s Azadi Hospital for treatment. Local police have launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.
Traffic accidents remain a major public safety issue across Iraq, with thousands of fatalities reported annually due to speeding, unsafe roads, and vehicle condition. The Ministry of Interior has said it is expanding road surveillance and enforcement measures to reduce fatalities on major highways.
