Counterfeit foreign currency, ancient coins, passports, and mobile phones seized by authorities at the Al-Qaim border crossing in Anbar Governorate.
Driver arrested at Al-Qaim border for smuggling ancient coins, fake currency, and foreign documents
ANBAR — Authorities at the Al-Qaim border crossing arrested an Iraqi driver for attempting to smuggle counterfeit foreign currency, 22 ancient coins, several foreign passports, and SIM cards, officials said Saturday.
The Al-Qaim Border Directorate said in a statement that the arrest was made in coordination with the Customs Center and other supporting agencies. “A driver of Iraqi nationality was apprehended while attempting to smuggle counterfeit foreign money, along with 22 ancient coins, foreign passports, and SIM cards,” the statement read.
A formal seizure report was prepared, and the suspect and confiscated items were referred to the Al-Qaim Police Center for legal action.
In September 2025, Iraq’s Interior Ministry reported that counterfeit currency crimes had declined by up to 90% compared with previous years, crediting tighter enforcement measures and economic reforms. Brig. Gen. Ahmed Mohammed Obeid, director of the Federal Intelligence and Investigations Agency, said the drop followed “a package of deterrent security and economic measures,” including expanded intelligence operations, judicial oversight, and increased adoption of electronic payment systems.
