Duhok opens new center to market crops from border areas

DUHOK — The Duhok Agriculture Directorate has opened a new center to collect and market agricultural products from the governorate’s border regions, serving as a hub for receiving, sorting, packaging, and distributing crops.

Located in the Faida subdistrict, the center was established in cooperation with the Kurdistan Regional Government and international organizations including the International Trade Centre, the UN refugee agency, and the Norwegian Refugee Council, according to Ahmed Jamil, director general of Duhok Agriculture.

Jamil told 964 that the center currently handles tomatoes, potatoes, apples, eggplants, cucumbers, and onions. “In addition to serving local markets in the Kurdistan Region, the center’s products are also sent to markets in central and southern Iraq,” he said.

He added that the directorate plans to eventually market Duhok’s agricultural products abroad.

Duhok is among Iraq’s most agriculturally productive governorates, known for crops such as rice, grapes, honey, potatoes, figs, and sesame. Fertile lands across the Nawkur Plain and Akre district have made it a key supplier of produce nationwide.
