Parliamentary candidate dies ahead of Iraq’s November election

ANBAR — Parliamentary candidate Ibtisam Abbas Al-Shujairi, who was running in the Nov. 11 parliamentary election for Anbar’s third district under the Sunni Al-Tafawuq Alliance, died Tuesday morning following a sudden illness, sources told 964media.

A post on her campaign’s media page read: “To God we belong and to Him we return. The late Dr. Ibtisam Abbas Al-Shujairi has passed away. Her funeral will take place at 1 p.m. from her home in Al-Jughayfi Al-Oula on Al-Sharika Street to the Islamic Cemetery, and condolences will be held at the Al-Khulafa Mosque Hall for two days, Tuesday and Wednesday after Asr prayers.”

Al-Shujairi was among the most prominent female candidates in Anbar’s electoral race. Nationwide, 7,768 candidates have been approved to contest the parliamentary elections, including 2,248 women and 5,520 men.
