Sulaymaniyah Parks Directorate warns against tree pruning during autumn

SULAYMANIYAH — The Sulaymaniyah Parks Directorate has cautioned residents that pruning trees during the autumn season could lead to drying and disease among trees.

In new guidelines released today, the directorate urged the public to “follow these instructions to protect our trees in streets and neighborhoods.”

According to the statement, “In the autumn season, when temperatures drop and trees begin to shed their leaves, their growth slows down. During this period, pruning trees unscientifically can cause severe harm such as drying or disease.”

The guidelines emphasize avoiding pruning in autumn, explaining that trees enter a dormant stage during this time. Pruning them “can weaken the trees and reduce their ability to resist cold and disease.”

The directorate also advised residents to “consult specialists before carrying out any pruning.” It said its teams are available to offer guidance “on the proper time and method for such work, based on their expertise and knowledge of each tree’s specific needs.”

The Parks Directorate highlighted the importance of “protecting the beauty and health of the environment,” noting that trees “play an essential role in purifying the air and enhancing the livability of our surroundings.”

It added that teams from the directorate are ready to respond to questions or provide assistance regarding tree care, encouraging residents to contact the office for advice.

“By adhering to these guidelines,” the statement concluded, “we can ensure that our trees grow healthily and continue to provide their benefits for us and future generations.”
