Teen in Halabja returns $36,000 to tourist after finding lost bag

HALABJA — A teenager from Khormal district in Halabja governorate returned a bag containing a bank card linked to $36,000 and Iraqi currency to its owner, an Arab tourist, local authorities said Saturday.

According to a statement from the Khormal district administration, on Friday, Oct. 3, 2025, Mohammed Shaho, an 18-year-old resident of Khormal who works at a car garage, found the bag in the Shallala Garage area of Zalm village while at work. Officials said the bank card was verified as holding $36,000, and the bag was returned in full to its owner.

The statement said the tourist “made several attempts to offer part of the money as a gift” to Shaho, but “he refused to accept it.”
