Garmian traffic police warn candidates against obstructing signs during election campaign
SULAYMANIYAH – The Garmian Traffic Directorate issued a warning Thursday to political parties and candidates ahead of Iraq’s parliamentary election campaign, cautioning them against placing posters in locations that obstruct traffic signs or signals.
“If any candidate or party places posters in locations that cause the concealment of traffic signs, we will impose penalties,” the directorate said.
Authorities emphasized that campaign materials must not be hung on road signs, traffic lights, or pedestrian crossings, warning that such actions could endanger road safety and disrupt traffic flow.
The directorate added that violators will face legal consequences, and any offending posters will be removed. “Any candidate or party that does not comply with these instructions will be subject to legal measures, in addition to the removal of their posters,” the statement said.
The official campaign period for Iraq’s 2025 parliamentary elections begins at midnight, with the vote scheduled for November 11.
In Duhok, municipal officials have also introduced new regulations on campaign posters and promotional materials. The measures aim to preserve the city’s appearance, protect the environment, and prevent the defacement of public spaces.
