Iraq’s National Security Service warns of WhatsApp fraud attempts
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s National Security Service on Tuesday warned citizens of new fraud attempts using malicious WhatsApp links, saying attackers aim to seize accounts, steal financial data, and extort money.
Agency spokesperson Arshad al-Hakim said in a statement that attackers lure users into sharing the app’s verification code. “They take control of accounts and exploit them to demand money, steal credit card information, and spread malicious links,” he said.
The service urged users not to share codes or personal data, and to avoid interacting with suspicious accounts or links. It also called on citizens to report cases immediately to authorities.
The statement stressed that protecting citizens’ data is a “national priority”, and said public awareness and caution remain “the first line of defense” against fraud.
