Iraqi PM, Qatar emir discuss attack as Iraq calls for Arab, Islamic meetings

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani spoke by phone Tuesday with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, expressing Iraq’s condemnation of what he described as “the heinous Zionist aggression that targeted the brotherly State of Qatar,” according to a statement from Al-Sudani’s media office.

Al-Sudani said the attack was “a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter, and a dangerous escalation aimed at expanding the conflict in the region.”

Both leaders agreed on the importance of convening Arab and Islamic states to discuss the developments. Al-Sudani noted that Iraq, as Chair of the Arab Summit, has called for an urgent meeting of Arab foreign ministers and is working to organize a gathering of Arab and Islamic leaders alongside the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.

Israel said it carried out a “precise strike” in Qatari capital, Doha, on Tuesday using accurate intelligence and munitions against senior Hamas leaders, including figures involved in ceasefire negotiations. The strike reportedly hit during a scheduled Hamas leadership meeting.

Following the strike, Iraq’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack that targeted Hamas leaders, calling it a “cowardly act” and a “blatant violation” of Qatari sovereignty.

Statement from Al-Sudani’s media office:

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani held a phone call today, Tuesday, with the Emir of the State of Qatar, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

During the call, Prime Minister Al-Sudani expressed Iraq’s condemnation, both government and people, of the heinous Zionist aggression that targeted the brotherly State of Qatar. He stressed that this act constituted a blatant violation of Qatar’s sovereignty, a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter, and a dangerous escalation aimed at expanding the conflict in the region, thereby threatening regional and international security, destabilizing the region, and dragging it into perilous consequences.

The Prime Minister reaffirmed Iraq’s solidarity with Qatar, underscoring support for its security and the safety of its people, and emphasized the need for a responsible international stance toward this aggression.

The phone call also included an agreement on the importance of convening a meeting of Arab and Islamic states, or an urgent consultative meeting, to address the aggression.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani explained that Iraq, in its capacity as Chair of the Arab Summit, has called for an urgent meeting of Arab foreign ministers, in addition to working on convening a meeting of Arab and Islamic leaders and representatives on the sidelines of the upcoming UN General Assembly meetings in New York later this month.

For his part, the Emir of Qatar expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Al-Sudani, praising the depth of bilateral relations between the two countries, as well as Iraq’s firm positions in support of regional security and stability.
