Fire at Erbil residential project quickly contained
ERBIL — A fire broke out Monday morning at the Mamostayan residential project in Erbil but was brought under control without casualties, according to the city’s civil defense department.
“At 11:40 a.m. today we were alerted to the fire. Within five minutes our teams reached the site and managed to control the blaze,” civil defense spokesperson Shakhawan Saeed told 964media.
He said more than 15 teams with six fire trucks took part in extinguishing the flames. “Aside from material losses, there were no human casualties or injuries,” Saeed said, adding that a full report will later determine the extent of the damage.
On the possible cause, he noted: “We suspect the fire started on the ground floor and spread to the upper apartments. Later, through surveillance cameras, the cause will be clarified.”
Erbil recorded more than 1,000 fires during the first seven months of 2025, most caused by electrical malfunctions, according to the city’s civil defense directorate. The highest number was in June with 270 incidents, followed by 196 in January, 170 in May, 118 in July, 93 in February, 87 in April and 77 in March.
