Wolf attack in Baadre kills 200 cattle

SHEKHAN — Around 200 sheep and goats died Wednesday night in the town of Baadre, Shekhan District, after a wolf attack caused a stampede inside a deep ditch, relatives of the shepherd said Thursday.

The incident occurred near the village of Mamane as livestock belonging to six households were returning from pasture. According to family members, two wolves attacked the herd, causing many of the animals to panic and pile on top of each other in the confined space, leading to suffocation.

“All the animals fell on each other and, due to suffocation, they died,” said Mohammed Mamane, the shepherd’s cousin. He estimated that the loss is heavy for the families, with each pair of animals valued at about 550,000 dinars ($392).

Relatives said the shepherd collapsed after witnessing the deaths and suffered a heart attack. He was taken to hospital Wednesday night and returned home several hours later. His condition is now stable.
