Sudani condemns attacks on Lebanon in call with Aoun

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani held a phone call Sunday with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to discuss developments in Lebanon, according to a statement from his office.

During the call, Sudani condemned “the attacks targeting Lebanon by the Zionist occupation forces,” stressing Iraq’s “firm position, both government and people, in supporting the brotherly Lebanese people and standing with them in the face of this blatant aggression.”

Both leaders emphasized “the importance of high-level coordination” and called on major powers, as well as international and United Nations institutions, to “fulfill their responsibilities regarding the violations of Lebanon’s sovereignty and the direct targeting of innocent civilians.”

Israeli forces carried out around 100 airstrikes Wednesday targeting central Beirut, the southern suburbs, the Bekaa region and southern Lebanon, with Lebanese media reporting extensive damage, dozens of casualties and a state of emergency in Beirut hospitals. The strikes came after Israel said the U.S.-Iran ceasefire does not include Lebanon, and has continued its campaign against Hezbollah positions.
