Teen cancer survivor runs grocery shop in Kirkuk to support family
KIRKUK — Between chemotherapy sessions and daily work at his grocery shop, 17-year-old Jaafar Qaid, known as a “cancer fighter,” continues his routine in Kirkuk’s Al-Wasiti neighborhood.
Diagnosed at the age of seven, Qaid has partially recovered and now manages a small store he opened with support from his father and grandfather to help provide for his family. His lively calls announcing produce prices and friendly customer service have made him well known both locally and on social media, drawing residents to shop at his store.
“I discovered my cancer when I was in first grade,” Qaid told 964media. “With God’s grace, I was able to open a grocery shop to support my family. My grandfather, uncles, and relatives were my biggest motivation after God, and I thank them all. I consider the illness a test from God to measure my patience and strength. By God’s grace, I overcame the disease, and I’m now in relatively good health while continuing regular treatment.”
Qaid’s father, Qaid Jaafar, said the family now relies on his son’s efforts: “With support from his grandfather, uncles, and I, he overcame his health ordeal and established this shop. Despite his past illness, he has almost recovered and enjoys strong community presence. He even plans to open a second branch.”
Customers expressed admiration for the teenager’s perseverance. “This is my first time visiting his store, though I’ve followed him on TikTok and Facebook,” shopper Makram Abu Abdullah said. “I found him to be brave, smart, hardworking, and managing his shop wisely.”
