Fire breaks out at Basra warehouse storing construction materials

BASRA — Civil Defense teams in Basra extinguished a fire Sunday at a warehouse storing construction materials and electrical appliances in the Tuwaisa area of central Basra.

Ten firefighting teams responded to the blaze, which was complicated by the warehouse’s location in a densely populated residential area. Firefighters were able to contain the flames and prevent them from spreading to neighboring buildings. No injuries were reported, though the fire caused significant material losses.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Basra has seen a series of large warehouse fires in recent weeks. The Civil Defense Directorate has linked many of them to poor compliance with safety regulations, particularly as temperatures in the region have surged past 50 degrees Celsius.
