Body of second drowned child recovered 12 days after Koya tragedy
KOYA — Volunteers on Thursday recovered the body of a five-year-old boy who drowned nearly two weeks ago in the Little Zab River along with his father and brother, local authorities said.
Goran Ahmad, director of Koya Civil Defense, told 964media, “A short while ago, the body of the second child from the Arab family was found, nearly two weeks after he drowned in the Little Zab along with his father and brother.”
The family, originally from Baghdad, had been on a day trip to the Bogd area in Koya district on June 21 when the incident occurred. The father, a law professor at Koya University, and one of the sons were recovered two days after the drowning. The younger child remained missing until Thursday.
“After many failed attempts, we finally located the child’s body,” said Shwan Salar, a local volunteer diver with the Bogd rescue team. He said the body was found about two kilometers downstream from the drowning site, near the Bogd water project.
“Due to the current and how the body was lodged, it had drifted far and was not easily recognizable,” Salar said.
