Samarra melon and watermelon flood Ishaqi market as harvest peaks
SALAH AL-DIN — The fruit market in Al-Ishaqi, south of Salah Al-Din governorate, is overflowing with melons and watermelons from nearby Samarra, where farmers are reporting a strong harvest marked by high quality and sweetness.
“This season looks promising and prices are reasonable,” farmer Safa Shakir told 964media. “The Dako variety of melon is priced at 13,000 to 16,000 dinars [$9 to $11] for two baskets weighing 45 kilograms. Watermelons range from 250 to 600 dinars per kilogram — less than a dollar — and are first grade. We’ve received good support, and this market is open around the clock for traders from all over Iraq.”
Vendors say the market is drawing merchants from across the country, many of whom prefer Samarra’s fruit to imports due to its flavor and freshness.
“This year, Samarra’s watermelon is flawless,” said trader Kareem Heet. “Grocers and merchants from all governorates come to this market to buy watermelon that’s red, sweet, and flavorful. The volume increases daily.”
Trader Hassan Faleh praised the local melon variety, calling it unmatched. “Samarra’s melon is like sweet honey syrup, and nothing compares. We urge the government to stop watermelon imports — foreign produce can’t match the local taste and quality,” he said.
