‘Vital role’: Al-Sudani commends UN mission ahead of Arab summit

BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Wednesday with Mohamed Al Hassan, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative for Iraq, to discuss cooperation with the United Nations, regional developments, and preparations for the 34th Arab Summit, which Baghdad will host on Saturday.

Al-Sudani praised the UN mission’s role in Iraq, commending “the efforts of the UN Special Representative and the programs conducted in coordination with the Iraqi government,” according to a statement from his media office.

In May 2024, Al-Sudani formally requested that UN Secretary-General Guterres conclude the the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq mission by December 2025. The United Nations Security Council adopted Resolution 2732 on May 31, 2024, which extends the mandate of UNAMI for a final 19-month period. UNAMI is set to cease its operations on December 31, 2025, except for any remaining liquidation activities.

Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani met today, Wednesday, with Mr. Mohamed Al Hassan, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Iraq.

The meeting included a review of ongoing cooperation between Iraq and the United Nations, regional developments, and the key topics to be addressed during the upcoming 34th Arab Summit, scheduled to be hosted in Baghdad this Saturday.

Prime Minister Al-Sudani emphasized the vital role played by the UN mission in Iraq and commended the efforts of the UN Special Representative and the programs conducted in coordination with the Iraqi government. He reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to continued collaboration and underscored the region’s need to foster dialogue as a path toward greater opportunities for sustainable development.

Mr. Al Hassan delivered a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the Prime Minister, commending Iraq’s recent accelerated efforts in repatriating Iraqi nationals from Al-Hol and Roj camps and detention facilities in Syria. The message stressed the importance of allocating sufficient resources to support rehabilitation, reintegration, and accountability in line with international laws and standards. It also affirmed that the relevant UN offices will continue working closely with Iraqi authorities to ensure the safe return and reintegration of Iraqi citizens.
