Rice planting begins in Amedi, but low rainfall expected to reduce acreage
AMEDI — Farmers in the Amedi district of Duhok Governorate have begun planting rice for the season, though agricultural officials expect a decline in cultivation due to insufficient rainfall.
“We’ve started planting rice in our fields in the Baniya Chalki area, the first location in Amedi to begin cultivation this season,” said Hassan Musa, a farmer from the Deraluk subdistrict. He added that the variety being planted is a six-month, long-grain type. “So far, six parcels of land have been planted.”
Deraluk is known as a hub for rice cultivation in the region, thanks to its relatively favorable conditions.
Ahmed Jamil, general director of agriculture in Duhok, confirmed that rice planting is underway as in previous years but said this year’s total cultivation area will likely be lower. “This year, rice cultivation in Duhok Governorate will be notably reduced due to low rainfall,” he told 964media.
Amedi, with its cooler climate and higher rainfall compared to other parts of the governorate, is generally more suitable for rice farming. Still, Jamil said conditions have not been optimal.
According to Jamil, between 148 to 160 acres are typically used for rice farming in the area each year, but the total for 2025 is expected to fall below that range.
