Iraqi Embassy in Syria forms committee to recover seized properties in Damascus
DAMASCUS — The Iraqi Embassy in Syria announced Monday the formation of a legal and technical committee to recover properties belonging to Iraqi citizens that were seized in Damascus and its countryside.
The move follows reports received by the embassy of individuals taking over homes owned by Iraqis.
In a statement, the embassy said, “We have received telephone reports about individuals seizing the homes of Iraqis in neighborhoods of Damascus and its countryside. To ensure the protection of Iraqi-owned properties, we have formed a legal and technical committee that will follow up with the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice, courts, and real estate registration offices to secure justice for all.”
The embassy called on Iraqis whose properties have been confiscated to visit the embassy during official working hours and bring necessary documents.
Required documents include a real estate registration document proving that the property is registered under the claimant’s name or that of a first-degree family member. Alternatively, claimants may provide a governor-certified lease contract proving legal tenancy.
In cases where the claimant represents the owner, they must carry a valid power of attorney authorizing them to follow up and reclaim the property. The embassy emphasized that individuals with the required documents must attend in person during working hours to proceed with their cases.
