Iraq expresses solidarity with Iran following Bandar Abbas Port explosion

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday expressed “the sincere solidarity” with Iran following an explosion at Rajaei Port in Bandar Abbas, southern Iran, that resulted in at least five deaths and over 700 injuries.

In a statement, the ministry extended condolences to the government and people of Iran, affirming Iraq’s support “during these painful moments,” expressing “deep sympathy with the families of the victims,” and wishing a “speedy recovery to the injured.”

The blast supposedly originated from several containers in the port, possibly containing hazardous materials or chemicals, although the government yet to specify the exact cause of the incident. The explosion produced a large fire and a plume of black smoke visible for kilometers.

Iraq reaffirms the necessity of strengthening regional and international cooperation to confront emerging challenges and confirms its readiness to provide any possible support to help mitigate the effects of this tragedy.
