Seven Syrians arrested for violating residency laws, police say

MAYSAN — Police in Maysan governorate arrested seven Syrian nationals on Monday for violating residency laws while working in restaurants and health facilities, according to a statement from the Maysan Police Command.

The arrests were made during a joint operation involving local police, the Iraqi Intelligence Service in Maysan, and the Residency Department, following orders from Police Chief Maj. Gen. Lefteh Fakher al-Muhammadawi.

“These individuals were found working outside legal frameworks,” the statement said. “Their presence contributes to the decline in wages for local workers, increases economic pressure on residents, and exacerbates unemployment. There are also health concerns related to their work in beauty centers and other health-related facilities.”

Police said security checks confirmed the individuals had violated residency conditions, and legal procedures were being followed.

In March, Iraqi authorities detained 738 foreign nationals for violating residency rules during a large-scale operation across Baghdad, the Interior Ministry confirmed.

Iraq is home to an estimated 1 million foreign workers, but only 71,000 have registered work contracts, according to the Ministry of Labor. The country relies on Labor Law No. 37 of 2015 and the Foreigners’ Residence Law No. 118 of 1978, requiring foreign workers to obtain valid passports, entry visas, and permits. Violators can face fines of up to $500 and deportation.
