‘The World Speaks Kurdish’: Erbil International Book Fair returns April 9 with global participation

ERBIL — The 17th Erbil International Book Fair will take place from April 9 to 19 at Sami Abdulrahman Park, organizers announced this week.

The annual event is organized by the Al-Mada Foundation for Culture and Arts in coordination with the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Ministry of Culture and Youth.

This year’s theme is “The World Speaks Kurdish,” highlighting the growing trend of translating international literature into Kurdish and recent efforts to gain formal recognition for the language on global platforms such as Google.

According to organizers, 350 publishing houses from 22 countries will participate, including first-time attendees from North Africa, the Gulf states and neighboring countries.

964media will serve as an official media partner for the third consecutive year.

The fair will feature panel discussions and debates on translation, language, and the publishing industry, alongside poetry readings, book launches, cultural dialogues, and artistic performances. Writers and intellectuals from Iraq, the Kurdistan Region and abroad are expected to take part.

Last year’s edition ran from April 17 to 27, welcoming more than 300 publishers. The 2024 theme was “Your Intelligence is Not Artificial.
