Security forces seize fireworks in Qaladze ahead of Newroz, Eid celebrations

QALADZE — Security forces in Qaladze, Sulaymaniyah Governorate, confiscated more than 80 fireworks ahead of Newroz–Kurdish New Year–and Eid Al-Fitr celebrations, authorities said Monday.

The Qaladze Security Directorate said the fireworks were seized during ongoing inspections by its unit. Authorities said they aim to prevent the sale and use of these devices before the celebrations to reduce risks to children and the public.

As the holidays approach, the demand for fireworks and firecrackers typically rises, often resulting in increased use by children and teenagers—a trend that has raised concerns in the local community.

Earlier this year, Iraq’s Ministry of Health reported 564 injuries during New Year’s celebrations nationwide, with 143 caused by fireworks.

Last year, Sulaymaniyah’s Bazian district banned fireworks and firecrackers, warning that children caught with them would be interrogated to trace their origins.
