Wasit suspends official working hours Sunday due to rainwater drainage issues
WASIT – Gov. Mohammed Jamil Al-Mayahi announced Saturday that official working hours will be suspended Sunday at all government offices in Wasit, except for service departments, to facilitate rainwater drainage.
A statement from the governor’s office said the decision was prompted by “continued rainfall expected through Sunday morning.” Authorities aim to clear floodwater from underserved areas and schools while managing potential flooding.
Heavy rainfall has overwhelmed drainage systems across Iraq since Friday night, flooding streets in Baghdad and prompting emergency efforts to clear the water. In Wasit, civil defense teams and ambulance services have been mobilized due to ongoing downpours.
“I urge residents to avoid traveling between districts and towns,” Al-Mayahi said.
