Ten arrested for gambling in Duhok’s Akre district

AKRE, October 14 — Police in Akre said forces had arrested ten individuals for gambling within a single week, in accordance with Article 389 of the Iraqi Penal Code.

Imad Hussein, a spokesperson for the Akre Police, reported, “We have apprehended ten people in Akre district on charges of gambling. Six of them were caught in a downtown cafe yesterday, and six days ago, we arrested four others while they were engaged in gambling activities. They are currently under investigation.”

Article 389 of the Iraqi Penal Code No. 111 of 1969 stipulates:

1. Anyone who opens, operates, or prepares a place for gambling, designed for public access, or organizes games of this kind in a public place or a place open to the public shall be punished with imprisonment and a fine not exceeding 225,000 Iraqi dinars or one of these penalties.
2. The same penalties shall apply to the owners of the venue.
3. Whoever is found playing gambling-related games in the places mentioned in paragraph (1) shall be punished with imprisonment for a period not exceeding one month, or a fine.
4. Money and tools used in the game shall be seized.
5. The court may also order the closure of the venue for a period not exceeding one year.
