Volunteers rally to save trees from heavy snow
SORAN — Local volunteers in the Sherwan Mazin subdistrict of Erbil’s Soran Administration have launched an annual effort to clear snow from tree branches and prevent breakage from the weight of accumulated snow.
A video filmed in the Lere village area shows volunteers shaking snow off branches to ease the load on trees throughout the community.
Siddiq Hassan, media chief of the Barzan Environmental Protection Battalion, told 964media, “The buildup of snow creates pressure on the trees, which often leads to broken branches,” Hassan said. “These volunteers perform this task every year to prevent such damage.”
Hassan noted that snowfall in the area reached up to 40 centimeters, prompting similar volunteer efforts across the Sherwan Mazin region in Barzan. Known for its strong culture of environmental conservation, Barzan views the protection of nature as a shared responsibility, extending beyond government initiatives.
Located in the northwest of Erbil, Barzan encompasses one town and 252 inhabited and deserted villages. The region is bordered by the districts of Akre to the south, Shamzinan to the north, Soran to the east, and Amedi to the west.
