Holy month approaching

Iraqi government cuts workday by one hour during Ramadan

BAGHDAD – The Iraqi government announced Tuesday that official workday will be reduced by one hour during Ramadan. The change, set to begin Sunday, March 2, 2025, will remain in place until the end of the holy month.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting from dawn to sunset. During this period, Muslims abstain from food, drink, smoking, and marital relations during daylight hours.

In a statement, the Council of Ministers said ministries have the flexibility to implement the adjustment either at the start or end of the workday.

Ramadan in 2025 is expected to begin at sunset on Friday, February 28, and conclude at sunset on Saturday, March 29. The first full day of fasting is anticipated to be Saturday, March 1. These dates are based on astronomical calculations, although actual observance may vary depending on regional moon sightings.
