Anbar court hands life sentence for drug trafficking

ANBAR — An Anbar criminal court sentenced an individual to life imprisonment on Monday for drug trafficking after authorities discovered 30,000 methamphetamine pills in his possession, according to a statement from the judiciary’s media office.

The court ruled that the defendant intended to sell the narcotic pills to users. The verdict was handed down under Article 28/First of Iraq’s Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Law No. 50 of 2017.

The decision comes amid a surge in drug-related crimes across Iraq, prompting officials to adopt stricter enforcement measures. By November 2024, nearly 8,000 people had been arrested on drug-related charges since the beginning of the year, with authorities confiscating approximately 2.2 tons of narcotics. In addition, by August, the Ministry of Interior reported issuing 140 death sentences and 500 life sentences related to drug offenses.
