Illegal gambling hall in Batawin shut down, nine arrested

BAGHDAD — Baghdad Operations Command shut down an illegal gambling hall in the Batawin area of Rusafa, central Baghdad, on Wednesday and arrested nine individuals, according to a statement from the command.

The operation was part of ongoing security inspections and area searches. Authorities said the hall was used for gambling, an activity prohibited under Iraqi law.

Baghdad Operations Command confirmed that security forces continue to monitor entertainment venues, restaurants, and cafés to ensure compliance with regulations.

Crackdowns on illegal gambling are not new in Iraq. In late October 2024, the Iraqi National Security Service announced the arrest of 21 individuals accused of operating and managing illegal gambling activities in private venues and residential apartments across various districts of Baghdad.

Islam, Iraq’s official religion and a foundational source of its legislation as outlined in the constitution, explicitly prohibits gambling.

Article 389 of the Iraq’s Penal Code No. 111 of 1969 states in part: “Anyone who opens or manages a place for gambling…shall be punished with imprisonment and a fine not exceeding 225,000 Iraqi Dinars…” The law also outlines penalties for individuals and cashiers involved in gambling activities, including the seizure of gambling materials and the possible closure of premises.
